The South and Reconstruction Jim Crow Laws Definiton- Any state law discriminating against an African Americans Examples- Segregation in public schools (African American’s go to certain schools while white children go to other schools), U.S. Army was segregated. Purpose- People thought the Jim Crow Laws helped keep peace by keeping the blacks and the whites away from each other. All the Jim Crow Laws did was create more tension between the races
Reconstruction Southern reconstruction both helped and hindered the South. It helped the South recover from the war and start to rebuild its economy, but it was too poor from relying on agriculture to completely recover. The south still was relying on Agriculture. Tensions in the South also grew because of the Jim Crow Laws and the Black codes. Black Codes The Black Codes were created on the intent of controlling the African American race mostly because people thought all African American’s were uneducated and illiterate and were not capable of making good decisions that would help the society.
